Welcome to the FARM TO FAMILY COMMUNITY FOOD PROJECT!
The Food Project
Inspired by the California Association of Food Banks Farm to Family Project, we are expanding the Farm to Family Food Project to community food banks across America. Farm to Family delivers fresh locally grown produce to community food banks from local farms. Join us in our efforts to expand our food project to communities nationwide!
Traditionally food banks have gathered mostly leftover or damaged boxes and cans from supermarkets, food processors and other mass distributors and then passed along those products to the most needy and hungry in our community. Food banks have always found some fresh produce to give away; a few have managed to give away a lot. But for the most part, they have traditionally offered processed foods — widely available free and by donation, as well as simple to transport.
Increasingly across America, local community food banks have been looking for fresh produce from local agricultural farms. Farm to Family Food Project is at the forefront of this change. Farm to Family has built relationships with farms and packers across the state to collect truckloads of fruits and vegetables for delivery to local food banks.
*Right now less then 10 percent of the food that passes through local food banks is fresh produce.
The shift toward more healthful food is partly about obesity and its rise among the poor. But it’s also a product of necessity. The food industry has become more efficient, squeezing the traditional supply of surplus cans and boxes. Fresh food offers a big, new food supply. There’s an almost unlimited supply of produce that’s not being adequately distributed and usually goes to waste from our local farms. That's where Farm to Family Food Project comes in. Our goal is to assist local food banks by establishing a volunteer local community based project for organizing seasonal pickups from local and state farmers, supermarkets and the community; supplying local food banks with nutritional produce for low income and homeless families.
